Error during Updates
Q:Currently using Nero 10 Platinum. Check for updates. Find WaveEditor, Express, SoundTrax. Download goes fine. Install appears to start running fine. But it fails. The EXACT text of message:
Fatal Error during Installation.
A:Hi MasterHarp- I can empathize with you- I had that error more than once when I was having problems installing v10.
Do you have your anti-virus and any security features disabled? If not, disable them and try the installation.
A:Please go to c:\windows\temp and look for Nero.Update.log.xxx.
Please attach the most recent one here
Q:Had to rename file to .TXT to upload. Message says attached.
Attached File(s)
Nero.Update.log.5.txt ( 70.4K ) Number of downloads: 24
A:The system isn't allowing access to certain registry keys concerning Sound Trax.
Are you logged in as the administrator?
A:This seems to be a common windows-problems.
You can find some instructions how to fix this at e.g:
http://www.okino.com/conv/changing_windows...permissions.htm
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/i...p;id=TECH135922
http://www.blazingimages.com/blog/technica...knowncomponents
Open the update-log and seek for entries like:
Error 1402.Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\F9B7F41790E6D004389384FDD9329309\9335EE1E23D5F854ABBA1BF93610CB2E. System error 5. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
Then, change the access rights for this keys as described above.
Where does this problems come from?
According to my knowledge, this could have 3 different reasons:
a) Error in the registry - e.g. a hard shut down or power failure during writing of registry, failed harddisc
b) Registry-Optimizers
c) Manuel Changes to registry and/or user-database - if e.g. the password of admin is lost, and you manipulate user database via boot-cd, this could cause this kind of problems.
As this problems are normally not only related to nero, you should also think about reinstalling windows.
Did you disable anti-virus and security, as I mentioned above.
What is your operating system?
A:Jens-f: I have to disagree with you. I checked on my Vista system and found I only have the first key. That's apparently because I don't have v10 installed- Only v9 and v11. This key includes class ID's specific only to Nero. One of them is SoundTrax. I'm too lazy to fire up my Win 7 machine which has v10 and v11 to see if I have the other class ID and what it is.
The full control permissions for this key include the Administrators and the System. Until we get a response from MasterHarp concerning his system and other questions, we can't provide much help.
This certainly doesn't require a Windows reinstall.
Q:Sorry this took a while. Yes I am an admin for this machine. OS is Win7 Home Premium. Disable anti-virus get same error. Doing a "manual" RunAsAdministrator for Control Center still give same error.
A:After thinking about it for a while, I remember that I got this message and it was related to SoundTrax. The problem is I can't remember what I did. I think I uninstalled the SoundTrax msi and reinstalled from the extracted files in theTemp directory.
Do you have any security software, other than that provided by Windows installed?
When you disabled anti-virus, did you also disable any security features it has?
What level do you have UAC set for?
How much free hard disk space do you have.
If you run regedit.exe and select Edit\Permissions, does the account you're logged in as have full control?
Q:I use WebRoot as antivirus and tried with it disabled. Same error. I have 80% free space on the drive. UACC is set at default. Never had a need to change it as I am full admin. Yes I have full control permissions.
A:Run msconfig.exe. Under Services, check the box that says "hide all Microsoft....". click on "disable" for all the others. Under Startup, click on 'disable" for all the others. Reboot.
Try the update running .ncc.exe as the administrator. Note that your system will not have WebRoot protection during this period.
Whether or not it works, go bacck into msconfig.exe and reverse everything you did above and reboot.
Like I said, I think I had to uninstall the SoundTrax .msi in either C:\Program Data\Nero\Agent\Repository or C:\Windows\Installers. I forget which one it is so I'll have to look tomorrow.
Q:The first word that came to mind after reading your post is unacceptable. Does one really think that in today's environment running a machine with NO protection is a good idea? Assuming I would do this and get yet another failure then what??
Resume waiting for a real response to my problem.
A:You're only running without protection long enough to see if you can update. As soon as you find out, put everything back as it was. It's unlikely you're going to get a virus or malware in 15 minutes or less. What I'm asking you to do is known as a clean boot to see if any services or applications running on startup are interfering. I forgot to look into the .msi issue. I'll take a look tomorrow.
If you don't want to do that, then I suggest you send an e-mail to tech support. Run the get support files utility from nero.com, downloads, tools and utilities and attach the resulting nerosupport.cab to your e-mail.
A:MasterHarp
Surely what withers is suggesting can all be done with Internet connection, so I would consider removing your means of connecting to the Internet
Most of the routines required to do the update should already be available on your PC, thus no Internet connection would be required.
But then I am no expert on this matter.
Q:I have opened an item with tech support. As my connection is wireless there is no easy way to not connect. As I have seen in my multiple attempts at this EVERY time I go to update Nero want to download. I have found multiple copy of the install file(s) on my hard drive.
A:MasterHarp
Just a thought, can you not switch off the automatic wireless connection. Is it possible that your PC is detecting that the download already exist and thus executing a faulty download.
As you seem to have the download already, have your tried to execute one of them and see if it installs
I appreciate that you may not have access to the check sum for the download, but perhaps the facility onhttp://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nero9-tools-utilities.html may be of use to verify the already downloaded files
A:@MasterHarp, - to the note of againploughman
Here the instructions for Deactivate/Activate (switch off/on) a WLAN connection.
On keybord with a function button (press about 3 seconds)
or under System Control
Important note:
Generally you should not work under enabled network connection, unless you need for accessing the Web. That for your safety and to avoid situations as againploughman mentioned.
Q:hg-dude
The function key option may only be applicable to HP Pavilion keyboards. Any way if this did apply to keyboards in general then I expect that there must be additional keystrokes required to change F12 and 'Switch Network On/OFF' facility.
Also from your images your OS and Nero in German and I have just realised that I am not Wireless but Ethernet so my Internet link is cable. But then that should not matter, all that has to be done, surely would be to disconnect the telephone line, unless they are using Wi-Fi facility.
A:Of course, when a cable connection, it is the simplest, - pull plug. I activate the WLAN only, when I work on the Web. Also I've disabled all services in the auto-start in the Task Manager, that require an online connection, just those of Nero, - safety first.
Since I have a German-speaking environment, if necessary, I declare always on the basis of screenshots. This is my special kind of service and requires slightly more effort. But some people are even more grateful to me for that.
A:hg-dude
I hope you do not think I was criticising your input. It is just that some people, like yours truly, are not so fortunate as to be able to follow some suggestions. Thus when I deal with a suggestion like changing the setting for the Network I tend to supply Step by Step instructions, like Open CP, select Network Connection then select the required Wireless connection to CLOSE.
I never know what experience USERS have, so I tend to start from BASIC steps.
Me I am still get to grips with Nero and all its quirks. Let alone the PC facilities. At time I feel that the TECHNOLOGY field has left me behind.
